FACIAL, JAW PAIN and HEADACHES

Many people suffer from headaches, face pain and jaw clicking. Sometimes this is because of problems with the jaw joint. Jaw joint problems affect about 40 percent of people at some time in their life.

20-25% of adults in the UK suffer from regular headaches.

The jaw and face are made up of complex networks of bones, muscles and nerves. The jaw or face can get misaligned and it can affect the complex net of anatomical structures which would cause any of the symptoms below:

  • Acute facial pain
  • Chronic facial pain
  • Ear ache
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Neuralgic pain
  • Sinus problems
  • Stiff jaw or jaw locking
  • Stiff neck or shoulders
  • Toothache

    Causation
  • Long history of tooth problems and accumulation of dental work
  • Broken jaw,
  • Arthritis
  • Nerve roots irritation
  • Trauma to head and neck,
  • Poor bite
  • Orthodontics work
  • Jaw clinching-chewing

Not just one disorder, but a group of conditions, often painful, that affect the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint, or TMJ) and the muscles that control chewing.

TMJ disorders fall into three main categories: myofascial pain, internal derangement of the joint, and degenerative joint disease, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the jaw joint.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDERS (TMJ)

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD, TMJ or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment.

Signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder vary in their presentation and can be very complex. Often the symptoms will involve more than one of the numerous TMJ components: muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones, connective tissue and the teeth.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TMJ DISORDERS MAY INCLUDE

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw
  • Aching pain in and around your ear
  • Difficulty chewing or discomfort while chewing
  • Aching facial pain
  • A clicking sound or grating sensation when opening your mouth or chewing
  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Headache
  • Uncomfortable bite
  • An uneven bite, because one or more teeth are making premature contact

ANATOMICAL STRUCTURES THAT CAUSE THE PAIN

  • Cervical spine
  • Facial bones
  • Facial muscles
  • Nerve roots and nerve plexuses
  • Sinus cavity
